Artist Statement

Family is intricately woven into the fabric of my personal identity, shaping who I am as a person and who I am as an artist. My work reconciles the self with the familial past using family memories captured through documentary photographs to dissect my positionality within my heritage. I focus particularly on the influence of gender within the domestic space and how traditional gender roles conflate with my understanding of the world and myself.

My work employs various artistic mediums in order to investigate aspects of my identity. I am particularly inspired by the nostalgia of old photographs from my own childhood and my family’s past as a way to interject myself in the reconstruction of narrative. In my artmaking I intersect the manual reproduction of photographs with the ability to alter these presentations—through cyanotype, painting, relief printing, embroidery, sculpture, and drawing—in a representation of how my presence affects and is affected by family. I aim to preserve my lineage through the unique lens of my own personhood and experience. Through my work, I invite viewers to reflect on the influence of the familial past on the familial present and consider the significance of heritage on identity formation.
